The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty, forex and money markets are closed on Tuesday on account of Maha Shivratri.
All wholesale commodity markets, including metal, are also closed.
Benchmark indices climbed higher through the session and ended nearly 1% higher each, backed by a rebound in most equity markets across the globe, and gains in the shares of metals, pharmaceutical, and automobile companies.
The BSE Sensex Index closed 294 points higher at 34,300, while the Nifty50 closed 85 points higher at 10,540.
Shares of Tata Steel gained the most at 4.1% after reporting a strong operational performance during the quarter ended December. The Nifty Metal index gained 1.1%, led by a 7.5% rise in the shares of Jindal Stainless (Hisar) as the company's net profit for the December quarter more than doubled from a year ago.
PSU Bank and IT companies were the weakest today, with those of HCL Technologies and State Bank of India being the worst hit on the Nifty50.
Barring the Nifty IT and Nifty PSU Bank indices, all other sectoral indices ended with gains.
